Etosha II (continued)

Sticking with the theme of animals in the road... this tortoise crossed the road just in front of our truck. I looove turtles, so I was pretty excited! I usually get excited when we see turtles, just ask René about the time I coined the phrase "turtles on the thing, turtles on the thing!"
This was the scene at a popular waterhole. The big guy is a kudu and the smaller ones are impala (not springbok, though they do look alike:) There were also thirty or forty vultures at this waterhole and the mama warthog with her three babies.
We drove down dik-dik drive and it lived up to its name! This is a damara dik-dik. They are really tiny, one of Africa's smallest antelopes. This one was on the road and he came right up to the truck. I just read online that they mate for life. I like it! (I also read that they only weigh 5kg.)
This is the male warthog (and three babies). He was pretty mean looking and we think he was actually mean. He was chasing the babies and the mom around and it didn't look very playful.
I almost forgot. At Etosha for these last two visits we've been in search of elephants. We haven't seen any (yet!) but we've seen everything else! On Sunday we drove around a smaller part of the pan (in search of elephants, they had been spotted there recently) and we saw seriously about 150 giraffes. They were everywhere! It was neat to look out on the horizon and see giraffe heads popping up everywhere! If you look closely at this picture you can see what I'm talking about, there are at least six giraffes in this picture. Maybe more!

  1. I am loving all your photos but being a chiropractor I especially love the giraffe photo. I want a copy of that when you return!

  2. Ashley,
I am enjoying your blog so much! I put it on my favorites list so I remember to look at it every few days. I love animals and I have always wanted to go to Africa. Now I can live through you and Rene. You are so lucky to have this experience.
