Today, during our

Windhoek walk, we spotted our first African "animals." As René and I were approaching this wall, I saw a huge spider. It had six legs (I know, spiders have eight legs, but I was scared and lost all reasoning skills) and was crawling strangely down the wall. I didn't like that and urged René to find out what was going on. When he got a bit closer to the "spider" he saw that it was actually this huge lizard (pictured here). You can't actually tell how big he is, but definitely longer and wider than your hand (palm to fingertips and thumb to pinkie finger).

Shortly after the lizard sighting, we came upon this huge palm tree. In this picture René is inspecting the giant insects living in the trunk of the tree, creating boreholes the size of your thumb. He was fairly convinced that they were planning an attack at any moment.
Very exciting stuff, we'll keep you posted on any further animal sightings!
Awesome pics guys! Seems like you are having a great start to your trip. We can't wait for more! We will be avid followers.

Glad you're finally there guys!
ReplyDeleteGreat animal shots. I wish I had a photo of the time Liz tried to kiss a Lizard in Mexico (she was 3) and it attached to her lip. Loads of blood and lesson learned. Do not kiss strangers! Maggie
