First impressions of Oshakati

Hello everyone! We have more limited access to internet here, because the place where we are staying (pictured here) is really nice, but does not have wireless. So, I'll post whenever I can!

It is super HOT today. It must be at least 90 (F) but, again, I think it's much hotter and really humid. Oshakati is much less green than Windhoek. It's really dusty here all the time. And the city doesn't have very much structure. There is one main paved road where there are many bars, restaurants, supermarkets, open air markets, etc. (It's funny to drive down that main drag because the bars all have names like "Top 20 Bar" and "Long Life Bar" and "Be Happy Bar.") The side roads are mostly dirt, and that is where the people live. All of the houses have big walls around them and some of them have guards that open and close the gates when people enter. A lot of houses that don't have a guard have barbed wire on top of the walls.

René and I grocery shop at a regular grocery store. Really, it's just like a grocery store in the States or in Canada- except the brands are different. (Oh, and they don't have mayonnaise, René searched for mayo the other day and couldn't find it anywhere.) There are some open air markets, but we haven't ventured there, yet! We've had dinner at the guest house where we are staying and it's been good. This picture is of the courtyard at the guest house where we eat and where I usually sit and read in the shade. It's really pretty and when it's not too hot, it's nice to sit out there. The first night we were here, we sat down to eat and there was a huge power surge in the kitchen and all the power went out! So, needless to say, it took a while to get our meal (and it took a while to get power back!).
